Listening to the Trees

On Thursday, June 10, The DH Club went to the Odette Sculpture Garden by the river. Everyone dressed in black to show our ‘guerrilla’ mindset. We placed our homemade mics in front of the trees so that we could ‘listen to them’. We sat quietly and just listened. Some curious onlookers asked what we were doing, while a few actually guessed that we were listening to the trees. We gathered a small group of strangers to join in, to which they willingly obliged.

After we heard everything the trees had to say by the river (‘too many trucks on the bridge’; ‘we’re trying to clean the air, but it’s getting harder to do’; ‘quit cutting us down for development’); we travelled to Jackson Park to take more pics of the trees with the mics. We decided to leave the mics in front of a group of trees that looked like they had something to say. The message we were hoping to send to passersby was one of listening to the environment, and for people to ‘speak out’ against the damage being done to the area by all the truck and car traffic. Before we left, the trio of trees insisted that we have a sing-a-long with them. We sang a little Motown tune with them, Marvin Gaye’s  ’Mercy, Mercy Me’.
